Not every one can have a front entry like these clients. They had plenty of room and decided go go all out. I’m showing only a portion of the cultured stone wall we installed but it was 150′ long.

After coming up the drive way we installed a flagstone steps to a flagstone patio entry. Your next view is of the water feature in which you can cross right over with very large iron mountain flagstone slabs.


We won a distinction award in 2008 from the Washington Association Of Landscape Professionals for residential construction for the entire landscaping. The front entry was just a small portion of the entire project. It included a 330,000 gallon fish and swimming pond as well as lots of plantings, sod, interlocking concrete pavers, and on and on. Most of us love the outside, weather permitting. An outdoor room can be a simple patio that allows the family in the home to enjoy the great outdoors. Many outdoor rooms are covered so that you can go outside any time of the year. Each outdoor room has it’s own personality. Some people want a full pledged outdoor kitchen, always cooking in one spot. Others want their BBQ to be portable. On that list clients should also include answers to questions like if they entertain outside? Big parties? Small gatherings? Do you cook? Would you like some mood lighting with low voltage lights? Do you want a spa installed? How about a water feature? The point is the outdoor room is a extension of your home. It should be a extension of you.

Landscaping is not just installing a lawn and irrigation anymore. Make sure your landscaper knows all the aspects of outdoor rooms. Are they qualified? Are they certified? What kind of projects have they done in the past that are similar?

Not all interlocking concrete paver patios need be looking the same. It is fairly easy to add quite a bit of pizazz to the semi ordinary paver patio. don’t get me wrong I think interlocking concrete pavers are an exceptional product and they serve a wonderful purpose for patios and walkways for much of the population. Sometimes larger patios need points of interest to take away from the repeat patterns that most paver work has. Sometimes this can be done with a soldier course around the perimeters and a mixed holland pattern that does not have much repeat patterns when it is laid.
The bigger the patio the more you may want to consider some point of interest. In the case below we installed a water feature in the middle of the patio constructed in Vancouver WA.

Maybe a circle kit can be installed in the patio. In the photo below we installed a compass point in flagstone inside a circle kit of the mixed holland patio constructed in Ridgefield WA.

I am a repeat customer of Woodys, because they do a thorough job, and look for creative ways to make the project better and pleasantly exceed my expectations. He and his team are always professional, prompt, and courteous. In this latest project for me, his team landscaped a large area at my property and augmented an existing feature with stone steps and a patio. The outcome was beautiful.‎
The area landscaped is in the video below. It was quite mudddy and now it looks great.

Putting up the display booth with Christine and Carolyn of Gregg & Ellis Landscape Design this year was a blast. We got lunch almost every day and the differrent kind of work we did was indeed fun. We put together a 3′ high planter box installed with 2 types of tiles and large squares of polished black granite. The planter boxes were planted with 4 large clumping Jackmontii Birch, bulbs and varigated foliage and lots of white Tulips and white Hyacinths. The birch were up lighted with 4 large low voltage up lights.The water feature was basically a rectangle with polished black granite with a tile cap. The inside of the feature has a swirling effect with cut flagstone and white sand as the bottom. We do have a very large art piece, two stone benches and a stone table. The show runs 4-24 to 4-28 Weds. through Sunday at the Expo in Portland Oregon.

Pond construction has been a forte of Woody’s Custom Landscaping for many years. We won our first grand award for one of our ponds through the Washington Association of Professionals in 1996.

Each pond we construct is designed to be a unique and independent water feature. We pay careful consideration to balance and scale on each and every waterfeature project we build.
No two should look alike. Yes they may have some simular features, but we do not install what I call “clone” water features or ponds. We feel each and every client has different ideas of what their feature may look like.

Bubblers are really the only types of water features that may look simular to one another. Most of our clients don’t want the water to show. This means you have to fill up with cobbles. Drilled columns do tend to look alike. Having a unique bubbler is difficult but not impossible.
All our ponds and water features are warranted to be functional, in scale and of course non leaking.

Installing a pond is great fun for all of us at Woody’s Custom Landscaping. It really doesn’t matter how good the pond looks though, if the planting does not give the pond justice for it’s existence.
Most hardscaping, which a pond is considered hardscaping, can not come alive until the planting is done. I personally think that it takes a couple of years, to truly appreciate a pond even with great planting.

I would never consider a pond or water feature completed until it is planted. Planting seems to soften the rocks and even the water. I love the look of ground covers growing into the stream bed and even the pond. Sometimes we get clients that only want us to install the pond or water feature. I can’t tell them enough that the water feature may be the most expensive item to install, but the planting is the most important. I always say get a landscape designer to make a plan, sketch, or at least a list of plants, if you aren’t going to have us install the plantings. Here it is December, and in South West Washington it has been a long cold spell. We are going on something like 10 days now of teen and twenty something temperature. It got me to stop and think of spring. How every thing pops out of the ground and puts forth a display of texture and color. Maybe the plants are saying, “I made it”. Any way, I am very glad that I can positively say, “This cold and starkness will go away.” It is the way of our earth.
In this blog, I thought I would show some spring and summer landscaping photographs of plantings. Ground covers, summer perennials, and basic planting jobs. It will at least help me get my mind off the thought of nature taking a rest. I like nature when it is busy. I like our company when it is busy also.

The next photo is of a water feature and stream area after 5 years of good maintenance after we installed it. I love when the ground covers start working their way into the stream and water falls. It makes the stream appear more natural.

The video is of a job we installed. The plantings are after one year. We did also install the paver path and all the landscaping.
