We did a lot of everything on this residential design build landscaping project. It took about 5 months with most of my crews working there. It was a pleasure to install the hardscape and landscape at their home. The front yard consisted of a 200′ long cultured stone faced retaining wall, 10,000′ sod, irrigation, front entry pond, and extensive flagstone patio work, trees, shrubs, low voltage lighting, dry creeks and of course bark.
As you will see the front yard landscaping was very large. the entire project was in the acres and I will be showing you just the front yard at this time. The following landscaping photos show all that was described above.

There is a large amount of people that realize that for the last two decades much of what we used to produce in America is now produced in other countries. That is one reason for our huge deficits as well as some businesses suffering, not to mention unemployment. I am proud to say that the products we use and what we build in our landscaping projects in Vancouver WA., are American made if not locally produced.
Take for example paver patios. The interlocking concrete pavers we use for our paver patios are made in either Washington or Oregon. The gravel we use is quarried locally also. So is the sand. When you get a patio installed by us it is 100% American made. The same is true with Manor stone, Pisa II wall units, CMU block and brick. Where do the materials come from typically for flagstone patios? Most of the flagstone choices come from Western United States with blue stone flagstone coming from the east coast. Again another American made product. The gravel or concrete and mortar come from local sources.

How about soil mixes, bark top dressing, boulders, sod, grass seed and creek rock? That is another 100% local product. Made in America.
What about the plants we use in our landscaping projects. Since Oregon and Washington are the nursery capitals of the United States you can rest assured they are made in America and again are a local
product that has some of the best quality you will see nationally in any nursery stock.
Now on to sprinkler system products. The pipe, fittings and swing pipe and drain line are made in America. We use Rainbird products and unfortunately the valves and irrigation heads are made in Mexico.
At least it isn’t a distant country.

Many times we are asked to make a wood wall out of pressure treated material. Well you don’t have to go far since Washougal WA is the place that makes most of our pressure treated wood.

Around 15 years ago, installing a irrigation system system in your landscaping was something that was not a normal bid item in landscape estimates. The feeling was since we live in the wet Pacific Northwest, that a irrigation system was considered an option in proposals. Much has changed since those days. Installing a sprinkler system now is a normal item that is constructed in the landscape.Most homeowners now see the value of a beautiful lawn in the summer. they know that the money they invest in a irrigation system, will be returned when they sell their home and it makes the home owners life a little easier in the dry months.

When installing sod, we make sure that you get the best soil preparation along with complete fertilization and liming. Kuenzi Turf is our supplier of sod. This last year they have come out with a sod variety that takes much more shade, uses less water and repairs itself better than perennial rye sod. I have used the fescue sod at my home and love the look and anticipate using less water to keep my lawn green and lovely.

By the end of winter I usually see many new clients who want to replace their old tired lawns with new sod or seed. My experience is that after 10 years or so weeds tend to come into the lawn areas either by nature or the gardener. It seems to be a fact of life that eventually weeds will win out. Sometimes my clients have had their trees mature over the years and portions of the sod can no longer survive in the shady environment. Then again every thing dies after enough time.

We like to use Kuenzi Turf. They have a great perennial rye grass that works well in filtered sun and sunny areas.
They also have a new product. It’s a fescue blend that takes a fair amount of shade. It uses less water and repairs itself after physical damage much better than perennial rye grass sod.
I have even installed the fescue at my house. I live in the woods and perennial rye grass sod does OK for 3 years or so, then it’s just to much work to keep nice. I love the fescue sod.

When installing new sod, it’s very important to strip out all existing grass, roots and all. Once that is done, soil preparation is key. We like to install about 7-8 yards per 1,000′ at a minimum of a three way soil mix into the area to be sodded. It’s best to scarify the soil then or rototill. The next step is to grade it smoothly and roll it. Make sure you fertilize and lime and then you install your sod. I like to order about 5% over the measurement of the area to allow for cutting around edges etc.

Starting off with a design by Christine Ellis with Gregg/Ellis Landscape design our clients were off to a good start on their landscaping journey. Prior to starting the landscape project in Vancouver WA, the 3 medium sized dogs claimed it as their own. Grass was destroyed. Lots of dog exploratory holes and just the wear and tear a dog can do. Now our clients can go out to their yard and enjoy it for themselves. The dogs I’m sure will play havoc with portions of the landscape, but I think the new landscape will hold up just fine. We installed a small paver patio with paver paths and lots of plantings, which is a huge difference from lots of grass. They still have a new sod area and now both the dogs and our clients can just go outside and enjoy.

Lots of back yards just aren’t what people want after living in their homes for years. The sod is old. There are no patio areas. Plants just don’t seem to thrive. We just finished this Vancouver WA backyard in May 2010. It was designed by Christine Ellis with Gregg/Ellis Landscape Design. The idea was to make the back yard more dog friendly for their three hounds. Paver pathways were installed with a paver patio off to the side for a little quite get away from the house. The irrigation had to be redone and we added a lot of plantings and transplanted many existing plants. It now has so much more livability with the added features. They love the different outdoor rooms that were installed. One side of the house has a rose garden with large stepping stones to it. The other side of the house has a small paver patio and a medium sized sod lawn for that quiet get away.

Most lawns in Western Washington last only 10-15 years. This is with good maintenance including, aeration, a fertilizer program, reseeding and lime applications. Most folks really just make sure their lawn is mowed and edged. It does take a little more work if you want a great looking lawn. This year we have done quite a few jobs replacing old tired lawns and installing Rainbird irrigation systems. A must on new sod installation is to have the soil well prepped. This means scarifying or tilling once the ground is bare and at least 2″ of a good three way soil mix installed depending on soil condition, and tilling again. Good soil preparation is a great start to healthy roots. Our irrigation systems we install are generally Rainbird. We are a Rainbird Select Contractor and find their products very high quality. MP Rotator nozzles which offer large throws but low volume are a great way to save some water. These nozzles are made by Hunter and offer a slow sure way to get water down deep.
If your lawn is looking a little sad and is over 10 years old you may want to consider tearing it out and replacing it with a new sod lawn and irrigation system. We stand behind all of our work with a full warranty on the lawn and irrigation.

When I first came to visit my clients in Vancouver WA, I noticed that they probably wanted a new lawn. The old lawn was in terrible condition. Moss and weeds were rampant throughout. We decided to replace with some new sod after soil preparation. We agreed to shuffle some existing Rhododendrons around and purchase a Red Japanese Maple and some Nandina “Sunrise”, then install some bright bark. After a quick discussion on the benefits of an irrigation system, that also became part of the contract. The job was done under $5,000.00 and our clients were very pleased.

How much stuff could a landscaper chuck, when a landscaper does chuck stuff?
Thinking the other night, I contemplated how much material we actually move in a averge job. I took a typical 2,000 square foot sod job and came up with this.
2,000′ old sod removal to dump approx. 130 wheelbarrows of material.
14 yards soil mix installed is approx. 160-180 wheelbarrows of soil.
40 wheel barrows of new sod.
My next question was. How much does the material weigh?
The old sod weighs approx. 4,000 lbs.
The soil mix approx. 13,000 lbs.
The new sod approx. 6,000 lbs.
In this particular sod job I figured landscapers move about 22,000 lbs of material. That’s right 11 tons.
The next question I asked myself was, How much material do landscapers move per hour. Assuming the job is approx. 40 man hours to install with a three man crew. I came up with 550 lbs. per hour. This figure is low because I put in no time in for the stripping of old sod, soil moving, grading, fertilizing and liming and of course the installation of new sod. So probably add about 300 lbs. per hour in actual moving of material. 850 lbs. of material gets moved per man hour.
Maybe that’s a good reason to hire a landscaper. That is a lot of weight to haul around.
