After going with another landscaper, we had to have Jason and his crew at Woody’s come out and do it the right way. We should have gone with Woody’s in the first place, but they never held it against us. They stayed committed to their original bid, got the work done earlier than promised, were VERY nice to my family and neighbors, and they did an A+ job. Finally, on the back end, Jason even came back out to answer a few questions I have. We bought a new house that needed a lot of new ‘things’, and of all of the contractors we used, Jason was the best in all aspects (hands down!).

Most of us love the outside, weather permitting. An outdoor room can be a simple patio that allows the family in the home to enjoy the great outdoors. Many outdoor rooms are covered so that you can go outside any time of the year. Each outdoor room has it’s own personality. How much stuff could a landscaper chuck, when a landscaper does chuck stuff?
Thinking the other night, I contemplated how much material we actually move in a averge job. I took a typical 2,000 square foot sod job and came up with this.
2,000′ old sod removal to dump approx. 130 wheelbarrows of material.
14 yards soil mix installed is approx. 160-180 wheelbarrows of soil.
40 wheel barrows of new sod.
My next question was. How much does the material weigh?
The old sod weighs approx. 4,000 lbs.
The soil mix approx. 13,000 lbs.
The new sod approx. 6,000 lbs.
In this particular sod job I figured landscapers move about 22,000 lbs of material. That’s right 11 tons.
The next question I asked myself was, How much material do landscapers move per hour. Assuming the job is approx. 40 man hours to install with a three man crew. I came up with 550 lbs. per hour. This figure is low because I put in no time in for the stripping of old sod, soil moving, grading, fertilizing and liming and of course the installation of new sod. So probably add about 300 lbs. per hour in actual moving of material. 850 lbs. of material gets moved per man hour.
Maybe that’s a good reason to hire a landscaper. That is a lot of weight to haul around.

I have been asked by Clark County PUD to be a speaker Friday, April 23, 2010. It is for the Clark County Home and Idea Fair. I will speak at the speakers corner in the new exhibition hall. The seminar will be at 4:00 PM. It should last about 1 hour.

I plan to cover why should our potential clients choose landscape designers and landscape contractors instead of being a DIYer. Nothing is wrong with home owners doing projects themselves, but I usually encounter a lack of planning, cheap materials and a very average job. I also plan to speak on how should homeowners choose a landscape designer or landscape contractor and think budget.
I will show some great examples of before and after shots of landscaping that were designed by landscape designers. Can the typical homeowner come up with visions like what I’ll show?
Most of the time, no.

We have at least some of our employees attend as many training sessions as we are able. We are also active in garden shows in Portland Oregon and Vancouver Washington.

It really doesn’t matter if you are extremely wealthy or middle class. When you have a landscape contractor install your landscaping, a budget must be considered. We all have our dream list of things we desire and feel we need, but can we afford them? Landscaping can be expensive, especially if you are considereing adding any hardscape elements. Hardscapes include retaining walls, flagstone or paver patios, seat walls, water features, brick work, boulders or simply put, anything hard and permanent. Hardscaping can cost many dollars a square foot. So, the landscape budget is a must.
Much of the time, my clients want the whole dream list, but when they get the estimate, they are quite discouraged. I try to ask for a budget, but many times they hesitate.They don’t realize landscaping costs that much money. I’ve done many estimates for my clients in which case landscape designers, designed the landscape. Many landscape designers neglect the budget process with their clients. The plans were exceptional. Paver patios, walls, and water features, the list went on and on. Any way the budget wasn’t considered. The design, the bidding process was a waste of time. The potential client just couldn’t afford the package as designed. If only a budget was considered from the beginning, the design could of been scaled down, to a landscape they could afford and attain.
Don’t be afraid to talk budget with your designer or landscaper. Once you develop a good relationship with them, please talk about what you can afford as well as what you want. The shock will go out from the estimating process.

A landscaping budget is a great way to keep your landscaping costs in control. If you are getting multiple bids. Make sure all bids are apples and apples. Make sure quanities and sizes are the same. If one contractor is installing a 200′ sq. foot patio and the other a 180 sq. foot patio there may be a difference of $300.00 in cost. Keep it apples to apples. It’s the same all through the estimate. A smaller lawn is less money. Less soil mix is less money. Smaller sizes in plants is less money. However on each bid item you are getting less product. It is up to you the homeowner to make sure you are in fact getting the best price, product and service.
