Imagine stepping out your back door. Taking three or four steps to a single step down sunken patio. You get a feeling of total privacy. The patio is made from 2by2 architectural paver slabs, with a 3″ gap, in which we installed Blue Star Creeper as the ground cover. On this particular job, there was no design plan. What I did was paint out with marking paint what I proposed to do, showed videos and pictures of what I was thinking about, and came up with a budget including square footage of lawn, patios, and seat wall, along with an itemized plant list. Their estimate included soil quantities, fixing irrigation, stepping stones along with the sq. footage and the plant list.
That was enough for them. It was very nice to actually install one of my creations again. I really don’t have time to come up with landscape designs any more. Our job is landscape construction.

Most people in Western Washington know that winter rains really don’t cause to many drainage issues in the landscaped areas of your home. yellowlab Jason and crew made us very happy with a large project on our property. We had extensive design preparation, sprinkler installation and tree planting completed. Jason was helpful with ideas, and freely included our desire to do some of the work ourselves to save on costs. Crews arrived on time, were courteous, and left the job-site very clean after they were done. All of the crew thanked me for giving them the job, (a first for us) and were happy when I told them how pleased I was with their work. Woody’s guarentees their plants for a year, and I have no doubt if I have issues in the spring, they will make it right. Excellent Contractor! Woody runs his business like a pro from start to finish. He has been in business locally for many years and many of his employees have worked for him for 5+ years. Woody and his crew were friendly, professional and extremely organized in their work. They were very careful of my existing landscaping and cleaned up after themselves as they worked. Excellent Service Woody, Jason, Scott and his crew did an amazing job on our landscape project. We were not only happy with the planting, but they built a paver patio and seating wall that was well beyond our expectation. They arrived on time each day and finished the project earlier than planned. But most of all, we were really impressed with their crew. Mid Project Review What can I say about Woody and his crew. Woody is a character a true one of a kind. He is one of the few contractors that I have worked with that delivers on what he says. Jason and the crew are true professionals and have done a great job so far. We are working with a landscape plan developed by Outman’s Landscape Design and Jason is always looking at how the printed plan translates to the actual product.

Would never use another landscaper After going with another landscaper, we had to have Jason and his crew at Woody’s come out and do it the right way. We should have gone with Woody’s in the first place, but they never held it against us. They stayed committed to their original bid, got the work done earlier than promised, were VERY nice to my family and neighbors, and they did an A+ job. Finally, on the back end, Jason even came back out to answer a few questions I have. We bought a new house that needed a lot of new ‘things’, and of all of the contractors we used, Jason was the best in all aspects (hands down!).

Around 15 years ago, installing a irrigation system system in your landscaping was something that was not a normal bid item in landscape estimates. The feeling was since we live in the wet Pacific Northwest, that a irrigation system was considered an option in proposals. Much has changed since those days. Installing a sprinkler system now is a normal item that is constructed in the landscape.Most homeowners now see the value of a beautiful lawn in the summer. they know that the money they invest in a irrigation system, will be returned when they sell their home and it makes the home owners life a little easier in the dry months.

Woody’s Custom Landscaping installs mostly Rainbird systems. We find Rainbird products high quality and consumer friendly. We offer at least a one year warranty on all parts and labor.

When installing sod, we make sure that you get the best soil preparation along with complete fertilization and liming. Kuenzi Turf is our supplier of sod. This last year they have come out with a sod variety that takes much more shade, uses less water and repairs itself better than perennial rye sod. I have used the fescue sod at my home and love the look and anticipate using less water to keep my lawn green and lovely.

I’ve got to agree with the quote above, but will add to the arid, bare or ugly, “muddy”.
In South West Washington, we don’t get a lot of snow, but we do get the rain. Rain makes mud, especially when a yard gets torn up to receive it’s new landscape.
After twenty plus years working in the Vancouver area, I am used to it, but really wish I was some where else a little more tropical and a little less wet.
To finish a landscape project that started out as mud and gets completed as a job well done really does strike home with the quote above.

Landscape lighting is a great way to add security to your home and at the same time allow you the homeowner to add another dimension to your landscaping.

The lights in this example are all Kichler led lights. They now have a 15 year warranty on the fixture and led components.

Led lighting uses about 75% less energy than your typical incandescent bulb low voltage light. Another bonus is ease of installation and less transformers are needed since the wattage is so reduced.

I got to say very clearly that I love landscaping and the business of being a landscape contractor in Vancouver and Portland. Landscaping is one of the few jobs where you must be a jack of all trades. We must of course understand horticulture and it’s practices. As a custom landscaper, being proficient in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, lighting, water features, design and business practices are all just a small portion of the wonderful industry of landscaping. We must be able to figure what our clients want and deliver the product at a price both the client and the landscaper can agree to. In the end we must make a profit. In the marketing end of things, attracting potential clients to your firm can be quite a challenge in these hard financial times, but the challenge is just another part of what I find stimulating and quite rewarding. What other trade can you work mentally and physically every day and still at the end of the day see just what got accomplished. So many people don’t see the actual accomplishments they go to work for every day and landscaping is not like that at all. To top it all off, each and every job has a degree of artistry involved. For example in the last 20 years of landscaping in our company, we have received over 17 awards for different residential landscaping and numerous trade show awards. OK, so we are not in L.A. or anywhere where it is temperate and dry. Lucky for us in the Pacific Northwest all we really have to concern ourselves about is the constant rain. I’ve grown used to it after 21 years. As my father says, ” That’s why they call Washingtonians “Moss backs”.” As a contractor we must keep slugging away at our work. Thankfully, we have work and are able to still install most of our landscaping jobs. The wetness can get you a little tired of slugging through the mud though.

As I was saying, the rain does make a lot of mud and makes cleaning up after ourselves a difficult task at best. As for real fun, try wheelbarrowing a full wheel barrow of gravel through a 6-10″ layer of mud. Even worse getting our equipment stuck is a reality almost every day, especially on new construction.

However, when it is all said and done, we make sure our clients get a picture perfect landscape installation every time. It does take some extra effort, but that is what you do in the winter as a landscape contractor
