Pond construction has been a forte of Woody’s Custom Landscaping for many years. We won our first grand award for one of our ponds through the Washington Association of Professionals in 1996.

Each pond we construct is designed to be a unique and independent water feature. We pay careful consideration to balance and scale on each and every waterfeature project we build.
No two should look alike. Yes they may have some simular features, but we do not install what I call “clone” water features or ponds. We feel each and every client has different ideas of what their feature may look like.

Bubblers are really the only types of water features that may look simular to one another. Most of our clients don’t want the water to show. This means you have to fill up with cobbles. Drilled columns do tend to look alike. Having a unique bubbler is difficult but not impossible.
All our ponds and water features are warranted to be functional, in scale and of course non leaking.

Water Features

Water features have been a very hot item the last 15 years or so. Every one wanted one. A lot of people got them. There seems to be bubbler rock in front or the rear of many homes. My guess is about 10%.
The demand for them has waned somewhat, with both the economy and with many people saying not so positive things about their ponds or water features. In fact this last year, we have filled in two ponds that some one else installed. They did not do a bad job. The people were tired of dealing with the maintenance. The bad news is out. Is it all true?
Now we get that yes and no answer. Yes, water features require maintenance. Yes they require people pay attention to them. After all that’s why they were installed. Right? Yes, many contractors just caught the wave and really did not know what they were doing and installed many with no regard to energy efficiency, filters, skimmers, and easy drainage for cleaning.
At Woody’s Custom Landscaping, Inc. we have been installing water features, ponds and waterfalls since 1989 in S.W. Washington and now in Oregon. Our clients still love them even though it does require some maintenance.

For the month of August Woody’s Custom Landscaping has been blessed with a booked month and all hardscaping jobs. This has been our niche for quite a long time and it is what we do extremely well. In Portland we are taking up a rather large flagstone patio and installing it the correct way. When I went to give the estimate, I noticed that the flagstone patio had 3-6″ joints. It also had about three inches of sand, that the flagstone were resting on. Kind of hard to not stub your toe and put out your patio furniture with confidence that the chairs and tables won’t find that sand and sink in. We have removed the sand, installed a 4″ base of 1/4″ minus gravel compacted, cut all the flagstone so that we have 1″ gaps and not more, reinstalled the flagstone, and finally we are putting a polymeric sand down to serve as the mortar joint.
We are also installing a bubbler fountain and a 200 sq. foot flagstone patio that will be on a mortar base and with mortar joints.All the flagstone is variegated 1-2″ thick and large pieces.

Our other job is in Vancouver and is a pretty big hardscaping job. We have approximately 1,000′ of Paleo Summit pavers from Mutual Materials, that are serving as a pretty large entry to the front of the home.
In the rear of the home we are installing about 60′ of seat wall with iron mountain stone as the face.
We also have about 400′ of paver patio that have a unique curve to them. Connected to the rear paver patio we are constructing a adjoining iron mountain flagstone patio of about 700 sq. feet. The patio is traditional flagstone work. Complete with concrete subslab, mortared base and mortar joints. It should be very beautiful. In the front and rear yards 24 tons of mossy boulders are incorporated as well as 6 pilasters for entry gatesfor the rear and front of the home. The pilasters are made with CMU block and faced with iron mountain flagstone. Once we get nearer to completion the homeowner is getting a complete outdoor kitchen. We plan to face it with iron mountain flagstone for them.

This week one of our landscaping jobs is a water feature in the main part of a new concrete driveway.
It is three bubbler columns with a cultured stone seat wall surrounding it. We also constructed a Pisa II retaining wall along one side of the drive way. The wall has Pisa lights installed in it also. The job is in Vancouver. We are working with Styx Construction in Ridgefield as a sub contractor as he installed the concrete, cultured stone gates, electrical, etc.
