I am pleased to have worked with Troy Outman. I find his designing skills innovative and quite in depth. He has worked as a landscape contractor which I think really helps his skills in designing.
I have enclosed his bio as well as a job we just installed in Vancouver.
Troy Outman started landscaping at the age of 17 in 1987 for Yoshioka Landscaping in Grass Valley, California; working for Yoshioka for 4 years. There he learned the value and art of landscaping from Mr. Yoshioka which he added to the hard honest work ethics he learned growing up on a ranch. He installed several of his own jobs on the side before graduating high school. In 9992, Troy graduated from Sierra College with an Associates degree in Ornamental Horticulture while working for a nursery and continuing to install landscapes. In 1994, Troy tested for and received a C-27 Landscape Contractors license from the state of California. He then built Outman’s Landscaping, a complete landscape company: maintenance, large tree work, design and installation.
In the summer of 2005, Troy Outman closed shop in California and moved to Colorado to attend Colorado State University, focusing on their Landscape Architecture school. In the summer of 2009, troy graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Landscape Architecture. While attending school, Outman’s Landscape became a design only company.
Troy moved to Battle Ground, WA at the end of 2009 and now owns Outman’s Landscape Design and Consulting. He is dedicated to helping the landscape professional along with the home owner achieve their goals on each project. Troy Outman will go the extra mile to get the job done right.

Over the past 2-3 years we have done a lot of work at this home. I was surprised when the client called and said “HELP”. After remodeling, (which ended up very nice), their whole yard was thrashed.
Irrigation pipes broken. Low voltage lighting wires to nowhere, Paver pathways torn up, Drainage pipes were clogged. Lots of dead plants and of course a huge mess. I really didn’t know what to charge so I offered Time and Material to fix and repair and create. It worked out very well and now every thing is functional with a few new twists. Our client is so happy we are proposing a new front yard. I invite you to spend a few moments and take a look at the landscape video. It shows the disaster and the the final product.

This back yard was small and they needed a little more space for entertaining, which happens a lot in the summer for our clients. Thus the new outdoor room or outdoor living area.We constructed a large paver patio and also built a small circle kit for a bistro table with Old Dominion pavers. The old patio was aggregate stepping stones. Instead of throwing them away we decided to use them to install a pathway down a long narrow space. Add some low voltage lights, stepping stones, reposition a fountain, some new turf and a whole new look was achieved.

When getting landscape estimates:
Make sure the landscape contractor is licensed, bonded and insured.
Make sure the contractor shows up on time and communicates to your liking.
Make sure the landscape contractor is listening to you. You are the boss.
Don’t get more than three estimates. It is a waste of time. Confusion follows shortly after four landscape bids.
Make sure the bids are for the same items and sizes. This makes the argument for hiring a landscape designer first.
If the price seems to good to be true, your right.
The lowest price might be done right, but ask yourself the question why was every one else more expensive. I’m sure there’s a good reason.
Check references.

I get a little upset when people belittle the landscape industry as a no brain type of business. I think it is truly one of the most demanding in knowledge and skill regarding contracting. To be a good landscaper you must know and understand plants, understand the hydraulics of how a irrigation system works and be able to install them correctly, be able to build decks, fences and pergolas, install and understand low voltage for lighting and irrigation clocks, construct masonry walls and patios, construct and build retaining walls of all types, install simple to elaborate paver patios, know how to build a good drainage system that works, and be able to build all those in scale and balance.
A landscaper must be physically fit, it is very hard work. They must be able to deliver their product efficiently in sleet, hail, some snow and most assuredly mud. They have to be good sales people, have a complete knowledge of how their business runs, be a accountant, word processor, problem solver, personnel resource expert, secretary and chief cook and bottle washer.
A great landscaper must love what they do as with all professions. I love what I do and really just want potential clients to recognize that we are far more than laborers.
A great landscaper does create an beautifully sculpted form of outside heaven.
We are the only industry that daily creates true living art.
We are also the “True Green Industry”, the others have just coined our true title.

There are many and I mean many who say they are landscape contractors. What I think you will find is that the many dwindles down to a select few who do what I call, “Landscape Construction”.
What is Landscape Construction? It is more than installation of sod lawns, irrigation systems, planting and bark, but Landscape Construction does include them. Landscape Construction is the building of patios, outdoor rooms, pathways, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and almost anything that encompasses hardscaping. Most landscapers can install a lawn and irrigation system, but how many can truly construct a flagstone patio or an outdoor kitchen with skill and professionalism. To become well versed at landscape construction it usually takes years of experience. Certifications are a great way to get a feel if the landscape contractor and his people are qualified. Awards for actual residential landscape construction projects is another way to qualify a contractor. References of actual construction projects is another must have as a consumer.
