Different Landscaping For Different Folks.

Every one has different tastes and desires when it comes to their landscaped yard.
Some want room for entertainment. Others want tranquility settings. Others are more concerned with keeping up with the Jones’s
Many want to screen out neighbors who live next door or just have a nice looking lawn and a few well placed shrubs.
I thought these photos may give a few examples of what can be done in your yard.
For entertainment and out door living areas the next photo shows a paver patio, fire pit and a ashlar pattern seat wall. Installed April 2010.

For casual enjoyment of the back yard with room for the family the next photo shows some different out door rooms or areas with seperate uses. Installed May 2010.

The next photo is of a very woodsy setting with elegant plantings and a pathway around the garden. This is a tranquil setting and a 2009 Grand Award winner for us.

The next landscaping photo is a 2008 award winning project we installed. It shows a very clean, simple but elegant front yard. The lawn is for the kids to have sport activities.

Turn Up The Heat In Your Backyard

Thursday, May 20, 2010
Turn up the heat in your backyard
More and more people are choosing to expand their living space into their back yards. Outdoor living spaces have become a popular area for the remodel market. Besides a BBQ, one of the necessities of a functional outdoor living space is a source of heat. This is particularly true in the Northwest where chilly evenings are the norm.
Fireplaces and firepits are an excellent choice for adding both a source of heat and an aesthetic element to your yard.

Mutual Materials offers a wide array of outdoor fireplace and firepit choices. We sell all the necessary items to build your own fireplace whether it is a regular fireplace or a Rumford design fireplace. We have recently become a distributor of Firerock fireplaces, which are pre –engineered component fireplaces. These are manufactured masonry units that are designed for their easy of installation and cost savings. They are designed to burn wood, but can be hooked up to gas if you prefer.

For those of you who may be more adventurous, we also offer pizza ovens from Superior Clay products. On Tuesday June 8th we will be conducting a hands on demonstration at our Vancouver branch from 2:00PM to 4:30PM.

For those who would prefer to stick to something a little less challenging, Mutual Materials offers an number of choices for you to do your own firepit.

Check out your options at any one of our nineteen branch locations and start enjoying your new backyard immediately!

Sincerely,

Craig Olsen

Back Yard Landscape Transformation

Starting off with a design by Christine Ellis with Gregg/Ellis Landscape design our clients were off to a good start on their landscaping journey. Prior to starting the landscape project in Vancouver WA, the 3 medium sized dogs claimed it as their own. Grass was destroyed. Lots of dog exploratory holes and just the wear and tear a dog can do. Now our clients can go out to their yard and enjoy it for themselves. The dogs I’m sure will play havoc with portions of the landscape, but I think the new landscape will hold up just fine. We installed a small paver patio with paver paths and lots of plantings, which is a huge difference from lots of grass. They still have a new sod area and now both the dogs and our clients can just go outside and enjoy.

Back Yard Landscape Makeover

Lots of back yards just aren’t what people want after living in their homes for years. The sod is old. There are no patio areas. Plants just don’t seem to thrive. We just finished this Vancouver WA backyard in May 2010. It was designed by Christine Ellis with Gregg/Ellis Landscape Design. The idea was to make the back yard more dog friendly for their three hounds. Paver pathways were installed with a paver patio off to the side for a little quite get away from the house. The irrigation had to be redone and we added a lot of plantings and transplanted many existing plants. It now has so much more attention getting features and I think they will like the different outdoor rooms that were installed. One side of the house has a rose garden with large stepping stones to it. The other side of the house has a small paver patio and a medium sized sod lawn for that quiet get away.

Outdoor Play Areas For Adults

We all love going outside in the good weather. Spark up the BBQ. Have an adult beverage. Soak up some sun. Enjoy nature. The list goes on and on. For many of us the question is. Where do I go to. 10 years ago it was on the lawn or your concrete patio. If you were lucky back then, on your wood deck. Times have changed. Wood decks are very expensive and have maintenance issues. If you want a composite deck, I think you will discover that the cost of the materials are what a paver patio would cost. The outdoor living area we installed this last March shows a nice sized patio with seat walls encompassing the perimeter. A fire pit was installed for the nights when a little warmth and coziness from a wood fire is just the ticket. Outdoor play areas for adults make sense. Who else deserves a little peace and quite away from it all.

New Sod And Irrigation Vancouver Washington

Most lawns in Western Washington last only 10-15 years. This is with good maintenance including, aeration, a fertilizer program, reseeding and lime applications. Most folks really just make sure their lawn is mowed and edged. It does take a little more work if you want a great looking lawn. This year we have done quite a few jobs replacing old tired lawns and installing Rainbird irrigation systems. A must on new sod installation is to have the soil well prepped. This means scarifying or tilling once the ground is bare and at least 2″ of a good three way soil mix installed depending on soil condition, and tilling again. Good soil preparation is a great start to healthy roots. Our irrigation systems we install are generally Rainbird. We are a Rainbird Select Contractor and find their products very high quality. MP Rotator nozzles which offer large throws but low volume are a great way to save some water. These nozzles are made by Hunter and offer a slow sure way to get water down deep.
If your lawn is looking a little sad and is over 10 years old you may want to consider tearing it out and replacing it with a new sod lawn and irrigation system. We stand behind all of our work with a full warranty on the lawn and irrigation.
