Perennials and ground covers have been sought after in landscaping for ever. I thought I would show a few full tilt examples of using perennials and ground covers in the landscape. The landscapes in the photos are all award winners from the Washington Association of Landscape Professionals for residential construction and won by Woody’s Custom Landscaping, Inc.
The landscaping photo below gives a good example of Black Eyed Susans in full bloom with some Asters and Autumn Joy Sedums. That job is in Ridgefield. It was designed by Quatrefoil.

The next photo shows what solid ground cover can look like. It is Purple Aguja. It does attract slugs, but with its beautiful foliage and blue spikes for flowers, it is quite spectacular. That home is in Vancouver and designed by Planning Solutions.

The next photo gives a good example of Irish Moss ground cover surrounding a Camas stone pathway. It does require a haircut around the edges, as the moss will cover the stones entirely in 2 years. This home is also in Vancouver.

For certified award winning landscapers who really care about what they construct, give Woody’s a call.

A peaceful get away place is pretty much a must on large properties. This gazebo was a distance away from the main home, but is a great place to get away. Closer to the home we installed 2 water features, using octagon shapes to match the gazebo and the rest of our clients gardens. You may be asking. Was the whole yard based on octagon or eight sided angles? Yes it was. Our client designed the yard herself. I was not sure at first how it was going to look, but she really did a good job. In fact we won another award from WALP for her landscape. In the photo below note also the header board for the yard is based on octagon shapes. The job was installed in 2000.

Below is a photo of her water features.

We also installed a a large paver patio based on the octagon angles. Please note the large black kettle area. Guess what angles were intalled.

Any kind of water feature has been a hot item, for a lot of years in the Pacific Northwest.
Woody’s Custom Landscaping, Inc. has been installing quality water features in the greater Vancouver/Portland area for 20 of those years. All our water features are have at least a 1 year warranty and we stand behind our work. Every feature you see in the photos is different. No two should be alike. Each should present the wishes and characteristics of the client. All have filter systems. All have flow controls. All are unique and soothing. I’ve tried to show examples of different kinds of ponds, water features, water falls, etc.
Below is a reflection pond with a tranquil setting

This next photo is what 33,000 gallons per hour look like going over water fallls

The next photo is another tranquil setting

Our next photo shows a mature stream and water fall setting. Plants are so important to give that natural feel to your feature.

The next photo depicts a classic flagstone patio and water feature

Over the years we have done a few projects that I have considered an art form. Landscaping could be called living art if done right. In this case though I am really talking about installing art in hardscaping or masonry work. The example below shows a design by Vanessa Nagel. The job was in the hills of Camas Washington.
We tried to show through masonry Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, The Three Sisters, and a crescent moon.
It was not easy and as with most art will likely be reproduced.

The next shows a compass point we installed in a interlocking concrete paver patio. The compass points are iron mountain flagstone set in mortar. The project was installed for a pilot. Thus the compass point was a big priority for him.

Not sure the next photo is art, but if your after your initial in your driveway we can install that for your as well. There are many kits available now that can depict almost anything your can imagine. Dragons, angels, graphics, scenery, to name a few.

If you already have some free standing art in your landscape. You may want to consider, bringing it to life at night. Low voltage landscape lighting with led is a excellent avenue for lighting. It uses less energy. bulbs last up to 17 years, and Kichler now offers a 15 year warranty on their led light fixtures and bulbs.
The photo below shows an example of bringing art to life in your landscape at night.

The last few days we have been removing a large bank of Cotoneaster ground cover. It was established we think about 8 years ago. It was very nice looking but the slope was 150′ long by 20′ or so. It was a huge bank of just Cotoneaster. Removing it was sort of fun. It took back hoe two days to take out. Talk about a huge pile of ground cover and roots. Must of been 120 yards of debri.
The job started as a small clean up making a path in the lower section. The first day however, the client said how much to remove it all. With the economy as it is, we switched gears quickly and got to removing it.
We are now installing natural stone slab steps from the bottom up and building a 150′ long by 1′ Manor Stone wall. From the wall to the fence line we are installing a 4′ wide gravel path. It should be a nice change for our clients and I think some evergreen foundation shrubs with a plethora of perennials would be a wonderful look. The trick is we can’t plant trees or shrubs that get too large. If your asking why? It is because of their beautiful view of Mount. Saint Helens as well as Mount Tum Tum and the valley floor to their north.
For a certified award winning retaining wall contractor who is huge on SERVICE give Woody’s a call.

I really enjoy all the videos we have at Woody’s, but there is nothing like a photograph of a yard before landscaping and the same shot after landscaping. Videos for me are too time consuming, trying to edit the before and after with sound. No thanks. Photos say a 1,000 words. Check it out.
The next photo is the wet mess we started in.

The photo below is the after. Can’t really install something like that with out a good idea of what you are doing. Makes sense we tell our clients a landscape design is where to start. Christine Ellis designed this project. She is with Gregg/Ellis Landscape Design.
What you are looking at is a small lake or big pond, 330.000 gallons worth and a large concrete interlocking paver patio. The lake/pond is half for fishing and half 4′ deep for swimming. We didn’t show much of the paver patio but you can view the paver paths to it.

The next two photos say it all. Before it was a weedy mud pit of a back yard in Vancouver Washington. After, you have a sports court, pergola, large paver patio, water feature, cultured stone railing, low voltage lights, planting and a great usable space.
Don’t be left out this next summer. You could have all of this.
Let our certified award winning professionals work for you.
Your dreams are only a plan away.
