Outdoor entertainment area above the sports court

Last year we won an award from WALP for a Residential Construction job we installed in Vancouver.
We installed a large paver patio, a very long and heavily engineered CMU block wall. The inside of the CMU block was faced with cultured stone. It also included a pergola ,stairway to the sports court, a water feature, plantings and low voltage lights. Below are a few photos from that job.

From mud hole to very large pond. Or is it a small lake?

I thought this was a good example of how a large mud hole can indeed turn into a award winning landscape project. All told the pond is about 300,000 gallons plus with about 30,000 gallons a hours running over the falls. Under the waterfall we have a place where two can go and enjoy the water fall from the reverse view. Not looking in but out. The pond has 4 skimmers, 3 in line pumps and one submersible pump. Half the pond is for fishing, about 11-12′ deep, with a fishing pier in stone. The other half of the pond is for swimming at about 3-4 feet deep. It even has a stairway into the swimming section.

Vegetable Garden with Raised Beds

This is part of a award winning job we installed almost two years ago.
It’s nice to come back and see areas designed for particular interests get used accordingly.
The raised beds are Tuscan Stone by Mutual Materials. The paver pathway way is a great way to enter the garden.

The second photo shows the garden and the gravel area.

Paver mania in Vancouver

The last week in July and boy has it been hot. The last two days it has been well over 100 degrees. In the Pacific Northwest that is hot. My employees have been putting in about 5-6 hours then go home. No sense getting heat exhaustion, or even worse heat stroke. Work is not worth the health of any of my employees.

This week we are working on two paver projects. Both jobs are in Vancouver. One of the jobs came about after we finished another paver job. As soon as he saw his business partners finished product he asked us to come and add on to his existing patio. The addition is a lower patio using Western Interlock pavers and a entrance to the rear yard as well as a 200′ sq. ft. extension of the existing patio. When done, it will complete his back yard entertaining and storage area.

The other paver job was using Summit Old dominion sq’s and rec’s. The materials come from Mutual Materials. It consists of a 4′ border around a concrete patio, paver pathway, 9′ diameter paver patio under a trellis structure and another 200′ sq. foot patio. It seems pavers are still and will be the rage for home owner staycation ideas.

Yesterday I got another paver pathway job that will really add value to their home.

Permeable Pavers in Driveway Vancouver Washington

Permeable pavers have been a little slow to coming in Vancouver Washington. In the Portland area it seems all the rage. How else can you have a system that actually helps clean water, is permeable, and looks good to boot. The pavers we installed are from Mutual Materials and are called Eco Priora.
It was not all that challenging, but was nice to see that some people in Vancouver can do it’s share to keep things greener environmentally.

The total square footage of the job was right at 1,000′. It will be used for the clients RV. Along side the permeable concrete paver drive way, was a concrete drive way. Some of the drainage from the drive is designed to go into the permeable paver area. It won’t all be going into the storm drain, which really helps reduce hard surface water run off.

Back Yard Renovation Vancouver Washington

One of the jobs we worked on this week was a front and back yard renovation, in Vancouver.
It consisted of stripping lawn away from the fence line, so that we could develop some planter areas and reduce the overwhelming amount of lawn.
We constructed a side utility area in pavers, so that garbage cans, lawn mowers, and house hold items can be stored, not in bark or dirt.
We installed some Birch trees for screening and fruit trees for a small area for fruit harvesting.
Along the fence line we are installing larger shrubs like Rhodendrons, Luecothoe, and Double File Viburnum to break up the fence line. Many one gallon and 2 gallon shrubs will be used as fillers for color, texture and interest. We also did a complete irrigation renovation to insure coverage of the new landscape.

Flagstone Patio and Stone Seat Wall

This little entertainment area is nice. Wrapped around the patio are cabinet gorge seat walls. They are installed over a CMU block with mortar, but none of it showing. LED louver lights were installed in the seat wall. Lichen encrusted boulders were incorporated into the wall also.

The patio is Iron Mountain flagstone installed over gravel with tight joints. In the joints we installed pave lock to not have any 1/4″ come up on bare feet. Originally, it was a children play area. Now it’s for the adults.

Low Voltage Lighting LED

The above is a good example of down lighting

This job was done this last winter and finally I have the shots I want.
We installed 150 led lights from Vista. They were a combination of down lights, up lights and path lights. We even custom designed some of the lights to fit into the pagodas.
LED lights cost more from the beginning, but the actual savings come fast. No bulbs to change for many years. Even in this case where we installed 150 lights we only used a 800 watt transformer. A normal system with lets say a average of 15 watts each, (which is low), would be 2 1000 watt transformers plus a 300 watt transformer. You have savings in less transformers right from the beginning. Labor costs are reduced also because as long as you have 7 watts or so running through your lines, you are in good shape to keep installing more lights. Incandescent low voltage lights are much more complex, making them more expensive. Please enjoy the photos.
Below note directional led lighting and the lit pagoda.

A great example of how to use down lighting on decks and steps.

A fantastic shot of how directional lights can highlight art and focal points.
